New Pirelli P Zero Wins Auto Express Comparative Tyre Test

Pirelli P Zero Auto Express winner

The latest comparative tyre test carried out by Auto Express has placed Pirelli’s fifth generation P Zero tyre on top in both dry and wet conditions, underlining the tyre’s performance and safety characteristics that was highlighted when it was launched.

The test consisted of nine independently bought summer tyres from different manufacturers going head-to-head.

As well as testing each set of tyres in dry and wet conditions, Auto Express also assessed noise, efficiency and cost.

The win for this latest fifth generation P Zero marks one more important accolade following a win in another comparative tyre test hosted by industry specialist Tyre Reviews that was published earlier this year in April.

Auto Express paid particular attention to performance in the wet, where the new P Zero really stood out thanks to its efficiency and safety when it comes to roadholding. It also scored excellent points for braking and aquaplaning resistance. In dry conditions the tyre also delivered excellent performance with outstanding results in terms of handling and braking.

When it came to acoustic comfort tests, measuring cabin noise by drivers and passengers on both rough and smooth surfaces, the new P Zero recorded very low levels of rolling noise, with Auto Express writing:

“Pirelli’s latest P Zero scored three first places, more than any other tyre, but what made it stand out was that two of these top marks were in wet and dry handling, underlining its mastery of all conditions.”

The improvement in new generation tyre quality has been made possible through innovative development and the use of artificial intelligence systems and proprietary algorithms created by Pirelli to help the R&D team identify cutting-edge solutions and reach better levels of understanding of tyre dynamics. In addition, tests were carried out on virtual prototypes allowing Pirelli to achieve better results in a shorter space of time while at the same time being able to reduce the number of physical prototypes needed in the development process.

Key characteristics of the new P Zero

The new P Zero’s strengths of performance, safety and improved handling were confirmed in the Auto Express comparative test.

During the development process Pirelli concentrated on the tyre structure and tread pattern design, which has been enhanced due to changes to the grooves and contact patch which in turn improves cornering grip. Additionally, a more even distribution of pressure makes braking more efficient and reduces tyre wear, giving the tyre consistent performance throughout its life.
