Bosch and Pirelli have entered a joint development partnership that aims to advance automotive technology by integrating cutting-edge sensors into tyres. This collaboration will merge Bosch’s extensive expertise in system-level hardware, software and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors with Pirelli’s pioneering Cyber Tyre technology, which utilises in-tyre sensors, algorithms and sophisticated modelling.
The goal of this partnership is to create innovative software-based solutions that enhance vehicle performance, safety and comfort. By using sensors embedded directly into the tyres, often referred to as in-tyre sensors, drivers can benefit from improved safety, better driving dynamics and a more sustainable driving experience. Both companies are committed to working together over the long term, with the aim of developing more advanced tyre signal computing technologies that could serve as vital inputs for improved vehicle dynamic control systems.
Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technology represents a breakthrough in the automotive world, as it is the first system of its kind to integrate sensors within tyres to gather real-time data. This data is then sent to the vehicle’s control system, enabling enhanced processing and vehicle response. Bosch and Pirelli have already collaborated on an initial project with hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili. In this project, the Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology was implemented in the Pagani Utopia Roadster, where it transmits crucial tyre information to the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit. This real-time communication allows for optimal utilisation of the tyres’ performance, ensuring maximum safety and tailored driving conditions.
As a global leader in technology and services, Bosch brings its expertise in system-level hardware and software to the partnership. Bosch is also a leading developer of MEMS sensor technology and manufactures tyre pressure sensors that utilise the energy-efficient “Bluetooth Low Energy” (BLE) standard. By combining this expertise with Pirelli’s advanced in-tyre technologies, the collaboration aims to develop a system capable of collecting, processing and transmitting real-time tyre data to the vehicle’s electronic control system with minimal power consumption.
Looking forward, Bosch and Pirelli plan to explore the integration of Bosch’s MEMS technology into Pirelli’s in-tyre applications. This fusion of expertise has the potential to set new standards in tyre technology, improving the driving experience by providing critical information that enhances vehicle dynamics and safety.
Piero Misani, Chief Technical Officer Pirelli commented:
“The partnership between Pirelli and Bosch has opened the era of tyre data and connectivity. This represents a huge step forward for the future of Pirelli’s technologies and the entire automotive industry. From being a tyre manufacturer, Pirelli will enter the world of data and software development, transferring real-time data to the vehicle’s dynamic control system. It is the result of 25 years of research and development by our tyre and electronics engineers.”
