The 10th annual Art of Motoring Exhibition recently took place in the Iconic Images Gallery in Waterloo Place just a stone’s throw from The Royal Automobile’s clubhouse in Pall Mall, the second year the exhibition has been held here.

This year’s exhibition brought together the works of 32 well-known and up and coming motoring artists and sculptors. It was open to the public from Wednesday 30th October to Saturday 2nd November, making these beautiful pieces of art more accessible to the general public in what is Europe’s leading curated automotive art exhibition.

Once again this year’s Art of Motoring Exhibition was organised and curated by Andrew Marriott of Pitlane Productions and Rupert Whyte of Historic Car Art in association with The Royal Automobile Club, with all the pieces of art available to buy either at the exhibition or online at www.theartofmotoring.co.uk until 31st December 2024.

Regular exhibitors who exhibited at last year’s exhibition included former Swedish Formula One and Le Mans winner Stefan Johansson, Anna-Louise Felstead, Tim Layzell, Ella Freire, John Ketchell, Paul Howse, sculptor Jonny Ambrose, Robin Bark, Simon Britnell, Emma Capener, Neil Collins, Brian James, Kevin McNicholas, Gregory Percival, Timothy Potts, Roy Putt, Jean-Yves Tabourot and Martin Tomlinson.

New to the exhibition this year were Peter Birthwistle, Paul Cameron, Dexter Brown, Rodney Diggens, Adam Compertz, Steve Goodwin, Peter Hearsey, Ana Herrero, Roy Putt, Oliver Ray, Terence Ross, Eugenie Smit, Madeline Sturrock, Ray West and Keith Woodcock.

Artists Tim Layzell, Martin Tomlinson and John Ketchell have been exhibiting their artwork every single year, along with a number of others who have been at most of the previous 10 exhibitions.

Some of the pictures that particularly caught my attention this year include this stunning Bentley Blower from Ana Herrero, an accomplished artist and industrial design engineer. Ana has a passion for classic automobiles which she vividly captures in her realistic paintings, as can be seen with the Bentley. Ana’s deep understanding of structure and form, help her merge her engineering expertise with artistic creativity to bring these iconic, timeless and classic cars to life on canvas.

Peter Birtwhistle’s detailed and realistic paintings of the nose of a Maserati 250 F and blue Porsche 356 Speedster really struck me. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in Automotive Design, Peters spent a short time at Vauxhall Motors Styling Department in Luton before moving to Germany in the mid 70’s working at Audi, Porsche and finally Mazda Europe in Frankfurt, where he rounded off his career as Chief Designer for Mazda Europe.

New to the exhibition this year was Terence Ross with his impressive wall mounted sculpture of Ken Miles in the Famous Shelby Cobra which caught my eye. Having studied at London college of printing, Royal College of art, Terence spent 25 years as an art director/creative director at some of London’s leading ad agencies before working full time as a professional automotive artist.

Timothy Potts’ career as a designer and sculptor has given him the opportunity to work with many clients including Bentley. Working as a member of the modelling team in the Styling studio, he was able to combine his love of automotive design with sculpture. His sculpture of a Type 35 Bugatti Lyon 1924 he was exhibiting and pictured here is particularly impressive.

I also always like Simon Britnell’s unique style of painting and love this 1907 The Silver Ghost and the 1970 Maserati Ghibli SS in blue Pervinca he showcased at The Art of Motoring Exhibition this year.
