A recent consumer research survey of 2,000 motorist commissioned by Bridgestone reveals that an increasing number of motorists here in the UK are holding back on purchasing an electric vehicle (EV). In fact, over one in four drivers surveyed said that they have no intention of making the switch to electric.
The survey found that 26% of motorists say they will never buy an EV, which is a significant increase from 17% in 2025, returning to levels seen in 2024. This is reinforced by the fact that only 16% said that they plan on purchasing an electric vehicle within the next 12 months.
What the findings from the survey found is that although there are more EVs on the roads in the UK today, many of the concerns that have surrounded electric motoring for years still remain firmly entrenched.
At the top of the list of concerns cited by 55% of respondents is how long the batteries will last and the perceived high cost of their replacement. And while 50% are concerned about the cost of charging an EV, 44% are worried about what sort of range they will get from their vehicle and then of course the initial high purchase price of an EV puts motorists off.
43% of respondents still don’t think that there are enough charging points for EVs with the charging infrastructure in the UK continuing to be a sticking point. There is also concern from 41% about how long it takes to charge an electric vehicle when compared to filling a car up with petrol or diesel.
However, when all is said and done and despite the hesitancy amongst motorists, the longer-term outlook remains more positive with 53% of responders saying that they expect to buy an EV within the next five years, while a further 7% are still undecided.

North Region Consumer Sales Director at Bridgestone, Drew Chapman, believes that the findings highlight the importance of continuing to support motorists in the transition to electrification, saying:
“Electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly familiar sight on our roads, but our research shows that many drivers still have genuine questions and concerns about making the switch.
“While some of the barriers are gradually reducing, issues such as battery life, charging costs and infrastructure remain front of mind for many motorists. The industry has made significant progress, but it’s clear there is still work to do in building confidence among consumers.”
Despite the findings of the survey, Bridgestone continues to develop its range of ‘EV-Ready’ tyres to support the many drivers who have already made the transition. For example, the Turanza 6 tyre has been developed to deliver a balance of efficiency, safety and long wear life given the extra weight of EVs. And then there is Bridgestone’s premium all-season tyre which is suitable for both combustion engine and electric vehicles.
Drew added:
“Whether drivers are behind the wheel of an EV, hybrid or conventional vehicle, they want products they can trust. Our focus is on helping motorists get the very best from their vehicles today while supporting the mobility solutions of tomorrow.”
Bridgestone’s ‘EV-Ready’ range is just part of the company’s wider commitment to sustainable mobility solutions which focuses on advancing sustainable tyre technologies and solutions.
