Theon Design Bespoke Porsche Commission: GBR005 Targa

Theon Design Porsche 911 Targa GBR005

Theon Design has unveiled its latest bespoke Porsche 911 (964) Targa, codenamed GBR005. This open-top model combines outstanding craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology and high-performance engineering, culminating in a driving experience that is nothing short of extraordinary.

Performance meets precision

At the heart of GBR005 lies Theon Design’s reimagined 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, producing an impressive 407bhp. Achieving a specific output exceeding the 100bhp per litre threshold, this highly tuned engine elevates air-cooled performance to unprecedented levels. Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, this Targa transforms every drive into an exhilarating adventure, whether on scenic tours or spirited backroad runs.

With a kerb weight of just 1,190kg, achieved through extensive use of carbon fibre engineering, GBR005 boasts a remarkable power-to-weight ratio of 341bhp per ton, outperforming the 991 GT3. Peak power is delivered at a thrilling 7,700 rpm, while a peak torque of 285 lb/ft is achieved at 6,650 rpm, offering effortless performance throughout the rev range.

A tribute to Porsche’s heritage

Painted in Signal Yellow, Porsche’s original colour from the 1970s, GBR005 commands attention. Contrasting Stein Grey Metallic PORSCHE lettering and matching ‘ghost’ stripes along the sill and bumpers accentuating its sleek lines, while 17-inch Fuchs wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres enhance its dynamic stance. The design pays homage to Porsche’s rich legacy with a modern elegance.

Carbon fibre mastery

GBR005’s lightweight body is made completely from carbon fibre, apart from the steel doors, which are retained for added side impact protection. Every panel has been digitised and precision-modelled in 3D to ensure a flawless fit. Beneath the surface, Theon’s bespoke carbon fibre tubs enhance torsional rigidity, matching a Theon coupe-like stability while preserving the Targa’s open-top allure.

An innovative bespoke carbon fibre bracing system is added to the floorplan to give F1-grade underfloor strengthening. This creates an exceptionally stiff yet lightweight platform for maximum driving stability.

Engineering excellence

Theon’s evolved air-cooled flat-six engine showcases cutting-edge advancements, including motorsport-grade aluminium heads, CNC machined inside and out and machined port designs for improved airflow as well as revised intake and exhaust valves for optimal performance and cooling. These enhancements allow the engine to roar to life, its character shifting effortlessly from composed cruising to ferocious acceleration.

Theon’s custom, switchable exhaust system, fully ceramic-coated, ensures versatility, giving a refined soundtrack in normal mode but when the valves open, it unleashes an electrifying motorsport-like flat-six roar which is particularly exhilarating with the Targa roof removed.

Driving dynamics redefined

GBR005’s handling is as sophisticated as its design. The suspension system features a switchable five-stage Active Controlled Electronics (ACE) damping system from market leaders TracTive. Soft springs deliver comfort for daily drives, while the system tightens up for razor-sharp handling during spirited runs. A lightweight, single-mass flywheel ensures immediate throttle response, complemented by a slick six-speed manual gearbox engineered to 993 RS specifications for seamless gear shifts and precise throttle response. Equally important is the full 993 RS brake setup that provides the car with outstanding stopping power.

Theon co-Founder Adam Hawley explains:

“With our Theon Targa commissions, we’re determined to set all-new standards for what an open top, air-cooled, Porsche 911 driving experience can look, feel and sound like. We’ve been focused on honouring distilling the signature air-cooled Porsche Targa recipe, elevating the benefits and systematically ironing out any of the foibles.

“We’ve forensically worked through the entire car as we always do at Theon, optimising every element – components you can see and those that are buried deep beneath the skin. We’re delighted with the result: this is an analogue, classic 911 that combines the sensory richness of Targa motoring – including more of that fabulous flat-six howl – with razor sharp, uncorrupted handling and modern GT3 levels of performance. It’s quite the cocktail.”

A bespoke driving environment

The cabin of GBR005 epitomises luxury and craftsmanship. The seats, inspired by Porsche’s iconic 928, are tailored for both comfort and support during high-performance drives, trimmed in the finest liquorice coloured semi-aniline leather, with yellow stripe Tartan, offset by dark grey Alcantara accents.

Modern amenities subtly enhance the experience. A Focal six-speaker audio system integrates seamlessly, controlled via your smartphone, which rests in a magnetised leather-trimmed holder. The redesigned Targa roof, crafted in modern mohair material, folds effortlessly into a bespoke storage bag, ensuring practicality meets elegance.

A timeless masterpiece

Each Theon Design commission represents a client’s dream Porsche 911 brought to life. GBR005 is no exception, blending OEM+ design with engineering excellence and bespoke craftsmanship to create a truly unique vehicle. Built at the company’s facility in the centre in Oxfordshire’s ‘motorsport valley’, it has taken over 6,000 meticulous hours to build GBR005, which joins its Coupe sibling in delivering a dynamic and luxurious homage to Porsche’s timeless classic.

Theon Design commissions start at £410,000 for Coupes and £430,000 for Targas, excluding the donor car and local taxes. Each car takes 18 months to build and is a unique collaboration with the customer to create their bespoke Porsche. For more information, please visit: www.theondesign.com.
