AC Cars, Britain’s oldest active car manufacturer, has revealed an exciting new phase in the evolution of its iconic AC Cobra GT Roadster and GT Coupe by announcing the introduction of an all-new engine option that will be launched in 2026.
This new 2.0-litre engine will complement the existing lineup of naturally aspirated and supercharged V8 models, providing an entry-level option for enthusiasts without compromising the Cobra’s legendary performance. Both the open-top Roadster and the fixed-roof Coupe will feature this cutting-edge new engine, while preserving the same striking aluminium chassis, lightweight carbon fibre bodywork and bespoke interior design that define the current lineup.
Heritage meets innovation
Remaining true to the rich heritage of the AC brand, the new engine has been designed with performance at its core. In collaboration with a global leader in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain technologies, AC Cars is creating an engine that will perform seamlessly with the dynamic GT platform. AC Cars will ensure that in developing the new engine, every drive will capture the thrill and precision that enthusiasts expect from an AC Cobra.
The engine will be offered in two configurations, tailored to suit the distinct character of each model. Lighter than the V8 variants, the new Cobras will also incorporate additional weight saving measures, utilising advanced carbon fibre materials in key chassis components. These refinements will further enhance the car’s agility and responsiveness.
Anticipated performance
Although full specifications will remain under wraps until spring 2025, initial estimates suggest the new engine will deliver an impressive 390bhp. This combination of power and reduced weight promises a thrilling driving experience, making the new models a worthy addition to the Cobra GT lineup.
New gearbox options
In another exciting development, AC Cars has confirmed the introduction of a new dual-clutch gearbox option, designed to perfectly complement the performance capabilities of the new engine. This modern transmission will offer seamless gear shifts and enhanced driving dynamics, while traditionalists can still opt for a six-speed manual gearbox for a more hands-on experience.
David Conza, CEO of AC Cars, commented:
“This is a key step in our programme of growth yet allows us to stay true to what define us. Offering clients a wider choice of performance engines will broaden the appeal for our exclusive sports cars and means we can reach the markets that impose higher taxation of large displacement engines.”
Looking ahead
With the unveiling of these advancements, AC Cars should be able to attract a new generation of drivers whilst remaining true to its heritage.
Final pricing and specification for the new AC Cobra GT Roadster and GT Coupe models have yet to be confirmed, but are expected to start from £235,000 Including VAT, with reservations currently open on the AC Cars website.
