Goodwood 79MM Competition

Last weekend, the 9th and 10th April, our photographer Gary Harman spent two incredible days at the 79th Members’ Meeting at Goodwood, packed with Formula 1, Le Mans racing cars, pre-war legends and touring cars, as they raced around the legendary Goodwood racetrack.

The following images are a montage of Gary’s photographs from the two days, covering the Graham Hill Trophy, Surtees Trophy and the Porsche 956 and 962 Group C cars.

This year’s Members’ Meeting featured plenty of track demonstrations and is always a more intimate event, as you don’t get all the normal Goodwood crowds, meaning you are able to access all areas as a member of the Goodwood Road Racing Club community.

Saturday was predominantly a day full of practice sessions, with every car timed for their grid positions for Sunday’s races. There was the Gerry Marshall Trophy practice session, followed by the motorbikes, which took to the track. The car practice sessions then continued until the first track demonstration of some iconic Formula 1 cars, celebrating the wonderful loud V10-engined era.

The afternoon saw further practice sessions for the GT cars of the Graham Hill Trophy and the powerful Can-Am cars of the Surtees Trophy.

The car racing then got underway later in the day with the Gerry Marshall Trophy, which is a two-driver, 45-minute race for Group 1 touring cars.

The day was then rounded off with the demonstration for Porsche 956 and 962 sportscars, with the Group C legends sprinting around the Goodwood circuit as the sun set, with the closing laps taking place in darkness, just as the background 79MM party got underway.

Sunday’s 79MM was filled with a full day of racing and demonstrations, which started with the Peter Collins Trophy sportscars, followed by A-series engined race for the Weslake Cup.

Just after midday, the Porsche 956 and 962 Group C cars took to the track before the big GT race of the day, the 45-minute, two-driver, Graham Hill Trophy.

The 79MM finally drew to a close with the Gerry Marshall Sprint reversed-grid race for Group 1 saloons, before the prize giving wrapped up the weekend’s activities.
